Is upper deck seating on a 747 any different to lower deck seating?

I have always wondered what it is like on the upper deck of a 747. Is it better, worse? Is the window seat just as good. Does it feel different taking off and landing because your higher. Do you get off first or one of the first?? I would like these questions and more answered if possible!! Thanks

  1. It depends on the airline. Some airlines have lounges or better seats in the upper deck. Some just have more coach. The upper deck is closer to the front, so if they're exiting from the front, you will get out quicker than folks in the back. You won't notice a difference on take-off/landing. They window might not have the best view, but no window seat has a great view. In general, bulkheads are they way to go on those big birds. You get more leg-room and have a little area to stand and stretch on long flights. Avoid getting stuck in the middle of a row. It's torture.
  2. Upper Decks on most 747's are usually used for business or first class, this would allow you to board the aircraft first. The sensation of taking off and landing on the upper deck is very similar to the main deck of an aircraft. There is slightly less headroom on the upper deck so the overhead bin compartments may be smaller, and do not exist on some aircraft. If needed though the flight attendants will stow your carry ons for you and retrieve them when requested.
  3. Because of the curvature of the plane, the windows angle slightly upwards. This means the view downwards isn't as good as on the lower deck. The windows are also lower down, so the average person sitting in the seat will have to bend over slightly to see through the window. Again, with curvature, the overhead bins are smaller in both depth and height. But to compensate, between the fuselage and your seat there are more bins that are top-opening. These are great for storing things within easy reach. It's like a small personal cabin up there, whether it's first class or cattle class. Most are first or business class up there, but some airlines do seat economy or premium economy up there. You are a little higher up and further forward than most passengers; however, take-off and landing don't really feel that much different. If you are lucky, wait after landing (when you're at the gate and the engines are shut down) until the crew come out. Then ask politely if it would be possible to visit the flight deck. Most crews are accomodating. In-flight - forget it. And don't ask the stewards/esses as they often say "no" without even asking the flight crew.
